Nathan Aspinall won his fourth European Tour title with an 8-5 victory over Danny Knoppert in the final of the German Darts Grand Prix.
Aspinall, who won three European Tour titles in 2025, returned to winning ways in Munich on Monday, defying a fierce fightback from Noppert to claim the top prize of £35,000.
The Stockport star came from 5-4 down to win after four straight legs, averaging 100.35 points and hitting the 180s seven times to thwart Knoppert’s bid for a first European Tour win.
Aspinall, who survived match dirt in Sunday’s opening round against Ricardo Pietrechko, started the final day on behalf of Pietrechko’s World Cup partner Martin Schindler.
The former World Match Play Champion went from 2-0 down with six straight wins to send the German No. 1 off to a 6-4 attrition victory over Andrew Gilding in the quarter-finals.
Aspinall then put on a weekend performance in the semifinals, defeating Kevin Doets with an average of 106.40 points, ending a six-game losing streak against the Dutchman.
This set up a blockbuster showdown with Noppert, and Aspinall looked poised for victory as he led 4-1 with 11 darters followed by a 108 combination.
However, Knoppert took advantage of his opponent’s double predicament to pull off an unexpected comeback, winning four consecutive legs of his own and taking control.
Nevertheless, Knoppert’s comeback was short-lived as Aspinall responded with legs of 13, 12 and 15 darts to take a 7-5 lead before finishing off a great show with a clinical 128 checkout.
“I’m really excited,” Aspinall admitted. Aspinall equaled Phil Taylor’s record of four European Tour wins.
“I’ve had a lot of knockbacks this year. I’ve been trying to keep myself motivated and it’s hard at times, but nights like tonight are what allow me to play this game.
“I said in an interview on Saturday that I was trying to find my love for darts again, and this crowd in Munich gave me that love again.”
