Livepool face a tough battle to reach the last four of the Champions League after losing 2-0 to holders Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-final first leg at the Parc des Princes.
Liverpool suffered four straight away defeats for the first time since April 2012, with Desiree Douai scoring a deflected first goal in a one-sided match in Paris, and Hviča Kvaratschelia punishing poor defending to add a brilliant second goal.
The loss would have been even worse had it not been for Paris Saint-Germain’s wasteful finishing and good goalkeeping from Giorgi Mamadashvili. Doué, Kvaratschelia, Ousmane Dembele and Achraf Hakimi made fine saves as the hosts dominated.
Luis Enrique’s side were also upset that at least one penalty was not awarded, with VAR overturning the referee’s decision to penalize Ibrahima Konate for a foul on Warren Zair Emery and choosing not to penalize the defender for a push on Nuno Mendes.
Liverpool were generally outclassed on the night and were lucky to only lose by two goals, but they will need to show significant improvement in next week’s second leg at Anfield after having just three shots and none on target on a poor night in Paris.
More to come.
