Michael Carrick says Koby Mainu is “close” to signing a new contract with Manchester United.
In March, Sky Sports News reported that both Mainoo and Harry Maguire were close to agreeing new terms. The defender’s contract was announced last week.
The 20-year-old’s contract has not yet been finalized, but it is expected to include a significant pay rise. His current contract was signed in 2023, when he was 17 years old, and runs until the summer of 2027.
Man United want a new contract that better reflects Maynou’s progress over recent seasons and his current place within the first team. The current proposal calls for a five-year contract until 2031.
And Carrick, whose future at the club remains unresolved, said the club were preparing to sign the midfielder to a new contract.
When asked in the press conference before the game against Leeds whether Mainu would sign a new contract with Man United, Carrick said: “I would like to think about it.
“It’s coming. We’re positive about it. Calm but positive. Time will tell what will happen. But we have a good relationship with him.”
Signing a new contract would be a major turnaround in his fortunes at Old Trafford. Mainu was not part of former head coach Ruben Amorim’s plans and at the turn of the year it was certain that his future lay elsewhere.
Since Carrick took over, the midfielder has appeared in all 10 Premier League games on United’s fixture list, becoming one of the first names on the team sheet.
Mainou was also included in Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad, with the 20-year-old featuring in both matches against Uruguay and Japan.
Carrick insists he can withstand Manchester United’s pressure as big decision looms
Becoming Manchester United manager has become an impossible task. Six men replaced Sir Alex Ferguson, but all eventually succumbed to the pressure. A seventh player is set to be selected this summer, and Michael Carrick looks set to be that man.
Carrick’s chances of returning to the Champions League have increased after he lifted United to third place in the Premier League with seven wins from 10 games since January. It would be surprising if a deal doesn’t happen in the top five.
It’s difficult to determine the traits needed to be successful at United. They followed almost every route. Jose Mourinho became a consecutive winner. Louis van Gaal was an experienced hand. Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim were project managers.
Carrick is in the “United DNA” camp. In other words, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side bringing their own baggage. Solskjaer’s flaws were obvious, but he overcame the scrutiny at Old Trafford better than most. This seems to be shared by Carrick.
“There are parts[of being Manchester United manager]- and it’s not disrespectful to say that – but I’ve known for a long time,” Carrick told Sky Sports’ Roman Kemp at United’s training camp in Dublin.
“Pressure is something I’ve had for a long time.
“What is expected of us here, how we go about achieving things, the amount of support we have and the oversight we have, it becomes normal after a while.
“Personally, it probably doesn’t feel as big as it looks from the outside.”
