Nina Meinke will be watching intently when Ellie Scotney steps into the ring this Sunday, but she’s not giving up on her blockbuster showdown with Amanda Serrano just yet.
The German fighter is the current IBF featherweight world champion and successfully defended her title against Diana Vargas in March.
Meinke was scheduled to face unified featherweight world champion Serrano in March 2024, but the bout was canceled when the Puerto Rican great was sidelined with an eye injury.
While Serrano has been linked with possible retirement, Meinke still has hope of continuing to finish unfinished business.
“I want a fight with Amanda Serrano,” she told Sky Sports. “It’s on my list and they promised me the fight and I still think I deserve it.
“I was in Puerto Rico two years ago and the fight got canceled. There are two more belts that I want. So we’re still in a different position than we were two years ago. So we’re both going for two titles. I think this is a fight that people want to see as well.”
“When they canceled the game, I promised them I would be there. I haven’t heard back yet, so I’m definitely going to knock on that door.”
Meinke defeated Daniela Romina Bermudez in September 2024 to win the IBF belt and become world champion, and won a unanimous decision in their rematch last May.
Lewisham’s Scotney could still be in the slot if he moves up in weight following Sunday’s undisputed super bantamweight bout with Mexico’s Mayeli Flores.
“The promoters have to make a decision (about a potential fight at Scotney), but we’ll have to wait and see first,” Meinke said. “I’m going to watch her fight. I’d love to be there to check it out. But for now I think we’ll have to wait and see.”
“Obviously for me, Amanda Serrano is the first woman I want to fight right now.”
Meinke insists Serrano remains her priority target for now and is eager to continue the fight over 12 three-minute rounds.
The 33-year-old missed out on the vacant WBA International lightweight title in April 2017 when she faced Irish great Katie Taylor, losing by seventh round stoppage.
Taylor has won all three fights against Serrano, one of the biggest rivals in women’s boxing history.
“We achieved our goal,” Meinke said. “I always wanted to be world champion and I was able to achieve that a year and a half ago so now I’m a double world champion.
“We fought 12 threes. We started with the big moves. The next plan is to win more belts, and that’s definitely against Serrano. That’s like the biggest fight I can get at featherweight.”
“She also mentioned fighting Tiara Brown. We’re going to negotiate with them and see what they think. Does she want to fight Tiara next or me?”
As for Scotney, she will appear on the undercard of the unification bout between Caroline Dubois and Terry Harper at the Olympia in Kensington on Sunday.
Although he may disagree with his approach outside the ring, Meinke believes Dubois has the upper hand.
“It’s going to be an interesting fight,” she said. “It’s been crazy what’s been going on the last few weeks. I’m going with Caroline. I think she’s the stronger, tougher fighter, but I’m rooting for Terry. I like Terry’s attitude.”
“I like that she doesn’t have any hate or anything, so I like that a little bit more.Terry is also a strong fighter.
“Before, I wasn’t a fan of this kind of hatred. I always like my opponents. She likes boxing. I like boxing too. Why should I hate her? When we get in the ring, we’re in the ring. There’s no friendship in the ring. We go to war. But before, I didn’t see the point in hating each other.”
Watch Dubois vs. Harper live on Sky Sports on Sunday 5th April.
