Chelsea held on to a 1-1 draw with Premier League leaders Arsenal in a tense London derby at Stamford Bridge, despite Moises Caicedo receiving a first-half red card.
Caicedo became the fourth Chelsea player to be sent off this season after his yellow card was upgraded to a red card after a VAR check for a stud-up challenge on Mikel Merino.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Enzo Maresca’s side took the lead just after half-time when Trevor Chalobah flicked a Reece James corner kick past David Raya with a header at his near post.
Arsenal equalized with Bukayo Saka twisting and turning on the right side of Chelsea’s box, before impromptu striker Merino headed a cross into the corner.
At this point, with 30 minutes remaining in the 10-man encounter, Arsenal looked well placed to continue winning, but they struggled to convert any clear-cut chances.
Merino came closest to a goal when he drew a sharp save from Robert Sanchez from the edge of the box, but it was one of just eight shots to Chelsea’s 11 as the home side defended resolutely.
The Gunners were without first-choice centre-backs William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães for the second time in 162 league games, risking being reduced to 10 men and receiving six bookings, including four in a stormy first period.
Chelsea were left furious after Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie was only given a yellow card for an elbow strike, while Chalova suffered a bruise on her cheek.
Chelsea continued to push forward at the final half-time, with substitute Liam Delap forcing a save from Raya, but at the final whistle the home fans celebrated their hard-earned point, although it was disappointing to see what would have happened had Caicedo not been sent off.

It was clear from the beginning of the match that Caicedo was fired up. There was a scene where he pushed Merino after blocking a quick free kick. He was lucky not to be penalized for being hit with a shoulder barge on the back by Julian Timber shortly afterwards.
Caicedo was nervous, perhaps with an expected midfield battle with Declan Rice in mind, but Chelsea needed composure. His overzealousness spilled over into sheer recklessness when he drove a stud into Merino’s ankle for a red card.

This sending off left Chelsea in a familiar position. At least they practiced playing with 10 players. But before that, they were better. The batting point tie might have been a victory if not for the blood on Caicedo’s head.
Indiscipline consumed them. And it’s not the first time this season. Maresca needs to eradicate this problem immediately.

“We were a much better team than them in 11-on-11, but it’s difficult because you have 10 players, but we handled it brilliantly.

“We tried to use the best solution, the best space. We knew that space was for Maro (Gusto) and Estevao. We can be happy even if we don’t win tonight.”
Arteta: A genuine London derby
“I think it was a really proper London derby. It was really intense,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told a press conference.
“From the beginning, you could feel that there was something in every duel, in every action.
“Both teams were very motivated to win, but we didn’t play a lot of football. There were a lot of restarts, a lot of free kicks, a lot of yellow cards, there wasn’t a lot of fluidity.
“We didn’t have too much momentum and had some chances in a good way. We scored a great goal. After that we had a couple of big chances but we lacked detail.”
As for the extent of the injury that ruled William Saliba out, he added: “I don’t know. I think he’ll have another test tomorrow. We’ll have to see the level of emotion, the feeling he was feeling and we’ll know more.”
Merino: It was a scary challenge.

“Fortunately, my ankles and body are very mobile, so I wasn’t worried about myself.
“But I knew it was a terrible challenge and an immediate red card.”

He added: “On the one hand, I’m disappointed because we didn’t win. When you wear this shirt, you want to win every game.”

James: The results are a significant statement.
Chelsea captain Reece James told Sky Sports: “It’s a shame we only got one point.
“We got down to 10 guys pretty early on, so that made it difficult. When we got down to 11-on-11, we had more of the ball.
“Everyone understands where we are and what we’re fighting for. Today was a big statement. Even if we wanted to win, there are positives to take from it.”
