Alex Fitzpatrick won his first DP World Tour title with a two-stroke victory at the Hero Indian Open, one week after his older brother Matt won the PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship.
They are the first brothers to win on the PGA World Tour and DP World Tour in consecutive weeks, and Alex said of his older brother, a former U.S. Open champion, “I adore him. I just try to be like him in every way.”
“It can be tough sometimes when you’re always chasing someone else’s glory, but luckily it’s my brother, so it’s not too bad.”
Alex started the final round in India four strokes behind defending champion Eugenio Chakara, but after five holes that gap increased to six, before Fitzpatrick fired and Chakara exploded for a dramatic turnaround.
Fitzpatrick made eight birdies in 12 holes from No. 6, taking the lead at No. 15 after Chakara made his fourth of six bogeys on the day.
Chakara also recorded breaks on the 16th and 17th holes to give him a four-shot lead over Fitzpatrick heading into the final round, and despite a double-bogey 18, the Brit posted a three-under 69 to finish on nine under.
The victory, Alex’s 87th DP World Tour start and achieved on a taxing back nine, secured further success for Fitzpatrick following his one-shot win on the mat in Florida last Sunday.
Emotional Fitzpatrick celebrating while drinking coke
Alex Fitzpatrick told DP World Tour: “I’m going to see my mom and dad (on Monday) and see my brother in Florida. It’s been a good few weeks for the Fitzpatrick family.”
“I’m very happy to see (Matt) join the ranks of winners and I hope he can continue to move forward. I’m going to celebrate with a pint of Coca-Cola and call my friends and family to soak in the feeling.”
“It’s been a long time and a lot of hard work, but I want to thank so many people for this. I’m so happy, I’m probably going to cry. I’m really excited.”
“At every point today (I thought I won), I asked my caddy how many putts I made from 6 feet, so I think that says it all.”
“I’m mentally exhausted. The challenge here is difficult, but I’m happy to come out on top.”
As Chakara disappears, Fitzpatrick pounces.
Fitzpatrick Jr.’s hopes of winning his first title were quickly thwarted when he recorded back-to-back bogeys on the third and fourth holes, and the next day, five days later, he slumped at 2 over.
But the 27-year-old picked up shots on three of the next four holes and recovered from a bogey on No. 10 to make five birdies in seven holes.
Chakara started the day with a bogey, but every time he picked up a shot he immediately hit it back, dashing his hopes of winning back-to-back titles in this event.
Then it disappeared completely, along with three trot wounds on the 15th.
The Madrid-born player shot a 3-over 75 to take sole second place at 7 under, with England’s Andy Sullivan, France’s Hugo Cousso and South Africa’s MJ Duffy sharing third place at 5 under.
The next regular event on the DP World Tour is the Volvo China Open in Shanghai starting April 23, before the season-opening major, the Masters at Augusta National, starts April 9.
