Harry Maguire: Manchester United and England defender given 15-month suspended sentence following guilty verdict over 2020 Mykonos incident | Soccer News

Harry Maguire has been given a 15-month suspended sentence by a Greek court for an incident in Mykonos in August 2020.

The Manchester United centre-back faced charges of non-serious assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery and was found guilty on all three charges.

Maguire’s 15-month suspended sentence was reduced in length and severity from his original 21-month sentence, but is still a second conviction for the charges brought against him.

Maguire was arrested in August 2020 after a fight involving family members outside a bar.

He was convicted in 2020 of assaulting a police officer and attempted bribery, but an appeals court granted him a new trial and the conviction was “null and void” in accordance with Greek law.

His retrial was postponed four times, with the last attempt failing in October 2025 because “court documents have not been translated into English.”

The original sentence included a fine, which has now been removed. Maguire is also so determined to legally clear his name that he has repeatedly turned down opportunities to settle cases with financial offers.

Mr Maguire’s lawyers plan to appeal to the Greek Supreme Court to clear his name.

Maguire has always vehemently denied any wrongdoing, and his representatives have privately expressed reservations about proceeding with the case against him.

Sky Sports News confirmed that only one of the three police witnesses appeared in court on Wednesday, but Greece’s lawyer said the remaining two officers did not need to attend as they had already submitted written statements.

The Greek prosecution lawyer in the Maguire conviction case strongly denied any corruption in the proceedings.

Maguire is not involved in the legal proceedings and is preparing as usual for Wednesday night’s Premier League game against Newcastle.
