It’s no surprise that Igor Tudor has left Tottenham after just seven games, but Spurs need to get this final roll of the dice right to maintain their Premier League status, says Sky Sports News’ Michael Bridge…
I think it was inevitable. What we wanted to know was when they would do it. Of course, Igor Tudor was informed of his father’s death seconds after Spurs lost to Nottingham Forest and buried his father Mario in Croatia on Wednesday.
So you would imagine that Tottenham’s board decided they were willing to make further changes in order to roll the dice one last time on this terrible season.
Spurs have to think about themselves. Although relegation is absolutely unthinkable, it is very possible.
Tudor is well liked within the club and his departure was a mutual decision and he leaves on good terms with the hierarchy.
They showed improvement in an unexpected 1-1 draw away against Liverpool, and performed well in the second leg against Atlético Madrid, although the pressure was a bit weak there.
Then, in the crucial match against Nottingham Forest, supporters outside the ground urged the team to continue before the game, but there was no response.
Spurs were playing well in the first half but really fell down when they lost 1-0. The second half was unforgettable.
By the time we go to the Stadium of Light in two weeks’ time, we could be in the relegation zone.
The next head coach will have plenty of time to get acclimated.
A new head coach will be appointed within the next few days. These will be in place when the players return from international duty. The players will spend plenty of time with their new manager, whether permanent or caretaker, ahead of an absolutely huge game against Sunderland, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Tottenham had to ask the question: “Are we more likely to stay in the Premier League with or without Igor Tudor?” They decided on the latter.
With one point from five league games, it would be difficult to argue with this decision.
Tottenham fans know this is something deeper.
I think the majority of supporters wish Tudor the best of luck. Not just because of this terrible news about his father, but because fans realize this is something deeper.
Recruitment efforts over the years have not gone well. Players who left the club and players who joined without properly replacing them. This is about injury after injury. The captain will be suspended for four games. The stand-in captain was sent off against Crystal Palace.
Tudor and other directors have previously said they were unaware of this. Managers often say this. At the moment, it certainly looks like a very difficult task. The task over the next seven games will be very tough.
PL experience is important – who’s next for Tottenham?
It doesn’t necessarily have to be someone with “Spurs DNA”. I don’t think you have to be the guy who sings Chaz and Dave in the car. Must be a player with Premier League experience.
Who knows what it’s like to go to Wolves away. This is a player who knows what it’s like to play against Leeds at home in a few weeks’ time. Brighton in a few weeks.
It is known that Igor Tudor was appointed to extinguish the fire. He achieved this with Juventus and Lazio. However, he was unable to achieve this at a club that was aiming to remain in the Premier League.
In fact, it didn’t happen. They lost to Crystal Palace. They lost to Fulham. From the beginning it seemed very difficult for him.
Tottenham remains a very attractive club for many managers. That’s why Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho have taken on that role. That’s why Mauricio Pochettino has said he wants to return. That is why we understand that Roberto De Zerbi will be interested in the role in the summer.
These are two very different Tottenham Hotspurs. Although it is certainly a big club, this may be one of the riskiest moves by the management team.
A new manager could end up relegating Spurs. Alternatively, Tottenham could remain in the Premier League in the summer, with big names rejoining the Premier League.
I understand that Tottenham would ideally like to appoint someone permanently. Where does that leave you? It is unlikely that the manager will be released from his contract at this stage of the season. The name that always comes up is De Zerbi.
He did a great job at Brighton and he did a good job at Marseille. His name will never fade. He had admirers during the previous government of Daniel Levy, and he still has them today. I still believe he needed some convincing to come here.
It’s going to be a big decision.
