Jonny Clayton vowed to ‘attack’ to maintain top spot in the Premier League table ahead of night six on March 12, speaking live on Sky Sports.

He explained that consistently winning the first matches and getting those two points was the basic expectation for himself with the extra points and a real bonus.

The 2021 league champions built a five-point lead over the rest of the teams and improved their position in the standings with victory on the third night.

Highlights of the semi-final match between Luke Littler and Johnny Clayton on the third night of the Premier League in Glasgow.

“At the end of the day, we’re trying to get as many points as possible,” Clayton said.

“If we can qualify in Week 17 after Week 12, then we’ve done our job.

“So I’m always thinking about attacking and always trying to get two points.

“Anything above that is a plus.”

But on Thursday, Creighton are scheduled to face seven-time Premier League champion Michael van Gerwen in their opening game, with the Dutchman looking to close in on the league lead.

Van Gerwen currently sits in fifth place with eight points and has struggled for form since winning the opening game at Newcastle on February 5.

“It’s fun to play against Mike and I have a lot of respect for him,” Clayton said.

“You know, I always liked the way he played. He never blames others.

“He’s just playing around. And if it’s not his night, he blames himself, he doesn’t blame anyone else, nothing else matters.

“He goes back and focuses on what he did wrong, and I think I took a lot of cues from that.

“Nobody else can help you, it’s just you, you have to make things right, and I really respect that, so to play against Mike we just go up and play a game of darts, no nonsense.”

Their friendly but fierce rivalry extends beyond the Premier League, with Creighton also keen to secure Bunnyhop van Gerwen’s place in the PDC Order of Merit, taking him fourth behind Jan van Veen.

“I did the right thing. I have a chance to catch or pass Mike,” Creighton added.

“But you know, I’m sure he has some ideas about that too.

“He won’t want to be overtaken by a little Welshman, so that’s my goal.

“If I can surpass Michael van Gerwen, I can always say that I was one place above Van Gerwen in life.

“So, I’m very happy.”
