Middlesbrough have announced the appointment of new manager Kim Helberg to replace Rob Edwards, while Swansea have appointed Vitor Matos as their new head coach.

Helberg, 37, is one of the most highly regarded young Scandinavian managers who has led Hammarby for the past two years.

He replaces Edwards, who controversially left the Riverside Stadium for Wolves earlier this month.

Helberg said: “I’m delighted to have been appointed as Boro’s head coach and I’m very proud to be here.”

“Many things point to Boro being the perfect choice for me. The way they play with the crowd and want to play suits me and how I like to work.”

Middlesbrough came from behind to draw with Oxford on Saturday.

“We want to play fast, attacking football and if we don’t have the ball we want to try to get it as quickly as possible. We want to move quickly towards goal and create a lot of chances.”

“I have been very impressed with the players and their efforts so far this season and am looking forward to working with them.”

Helberg will be joined by longtime assistant David Cerrini, who will work with Adi Viveash on the coaching staff.

Boro are second in the Championship standings, seven points behind leaders Coventry. They host the Sky Blues on Tuesday night and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports+.

Viveash will continue to manage that game, with Helberg taking over later this week.

Helberg has attracted interest from other Championship clubs and was in talks with Swansea last week, but it was Boro who sealed his signature.

Matos joins Swansea

Meanwhile, Swansea have appointed Matos on a contract until the summer of 2029.

Matos is the manager of Portugal’s Marítimo, and has won six of 12 games since taking over as permanent manager in June.

The 37-year-old previously worked as an elite development coach under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and as assistant to Pep Lijnders at Red Bull Salzburg.

“Matos has been identified as an outstanding option for this role and was selected for his ability to execute a high-intensity, possession-based style of play,” Swansea said in a statement.

“His appointment continues Swansea’s long track record of providing opportunities and support to ambitious, technically focused young coaches, and Matos was an outstanding candidate from among the players interviewed by the club in a thorough and concise recruitment process.”

Matos will take charge of Swansea’s derby game on Tuesday night.

Who is Kim Helberg?

Lyall Thomas of Sky Sports News has this to say:

“Kim Helberg is one of Sweden’s most highly regarded young managers and has been impressing other clubs, including England, for some time. Swansea actually spoke to the 37-year-old before appointing Alan Sheehan.”

“He led Hammarby to second place in the Swedish top flight in the 2025 season. Hammarby wanted to keep him and were planning to offer him an extension to his contract, which expires at the end of next season.”

“He is known for taking a number of young players and developing them at Hammarby, including some who were sold to make money for the club.

“His teams are also known for the exciting and attacking way they play. They scored the most goals in the Allsvenskan last season (60) and had the highest expected goals per game in the (xGF) category with 1.97 goals per game.”

“They will be competing in Champions League qualification next season, but Helberg will not be in charge.”
