Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.
Liverpool have announced that they have reached an agreement with the legendary forward, who will end his “amazing” nine-year stay at Anfield at the end of this season and become a free agent.
Salah’s contract, which he only signed in April last year, will be shortened by a year after a difficult season for the 33-year-old, who left the club and had a public falling out with head coach Arne Slott.
The Egyptian, one of Liverpool’s all-time great players, will make his farewell to Anfield on May 24, the final day of the Premier League season against Brentford.
Liverpool said in a statement: “Out of respect and gratitude to our supporters, Salah has expressed his wish to make this announcement to our supporters at the earliest opportunity to provide transparency about his future.”
The 33-year-old, who has won all the top trophies with Liverpool, could add even more silverware before departing with a lot of competition left in this season.
The reigning Premier League champions will face holders Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals and Manchester City in the FA Cup last eight.
Liverpool are also aiming to qualify for the Champions League through league play. Arne Slott’s side are in fifth place, with England still in position to qualify for fifth place with seven games remaining.
Analysis: What’s next for Salah?
Sky Sports News Chief Correspondent Kaveh Solhekol:
“Mohamed Salah’s departure will save Liverpool money. You have to remember his wages. He is said to be the highest-paid player in Liverpool’s history, with some reports saying he earns between £350,000 and £400,000 a week.”
“Salah is still a great player, but has he reached his absolute peak? He’s 33 now and will be 34 in June. Did Liverpool really want to keep paying him that much until the summer of 2027?”
“Behind the scenes, his representatives have held discussions with Liverpool and reached an agreement that is convenient for all parties. This means he can continue to play for Liverpool until the end of the season.”
“I think it’s too early to say for sure that he will go to Saudi Arabia. In fact, we know that several clubs in Saudi Arabia are interested in signing him.”
“Al Ittihad made a verbal offer of £150 million in 2023, but Liverpool turned them down. MLS clubs also want him, but I think he has a lot of options.”
“Premier League clubs and European clubs would also be interested in signing him.
“About a year ago, there was a possibility that he could play for another Premier League club and that was an option on the table, but of course things have changed now.
“For a long time, about a year ago, it looked like he might be leaving Liverpool and Liverpool weren’t particularly keen on offering him a new contract, but then he had a great season, scoring 28/29 goals and Liverpool won the title.
“I think Liverpool were cornered and felt they had to give him a new contract.”

“Mohamed Salah will end his brilliant career at Liverpool FC at the end of the 2025-26 season.
“The forward has reached agreement with the Reds, closing a remarkable chapter after nine years at Anfield.
“Salah has expressed his desire to make this announcement at the earliest opportunity, out of respect and gratitude to his supporters, to provide them with transparency about his future.
“Signed from AS Roma in the summer of 2017, the number 11 has cemented his place as one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history, helping the club to two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups, as well as the FA Community Shield.
“With 255 goals in 435 appearances, the Egyptian is third on the Reds’ all-time top scorer list and has won the Premier League’s Golden Boot award four times, as well as a number of other personal awards.
“While there is still plenty of time left to play this season, Salah is firmly focused on finishing his season at Liverpool on a high note. Therefore, the time to fully celebrate his achievements and accomplishments will be later this year when he bids farewell to Anfield.”

In a video published on social media, Salah said:
“Unfortunately this day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of this season.”
“First of all, I would like to say that I never imagined that this club, this city and these people would become a part of my life.
“Liverpool is more than just a football club. It’s passion, it’s history. It’s a spirit that cannot be explained in words by anyone who is not part of this club.
“We celebrated victories, won the most important trophies and fought through the most difficult times of our lives together.
“I would like to thank everyone who has been part of this club throughout my time here, especially my team-mates past and present, and the fans…
“I have no words. The support you showed me during the best times of my career and the way you stood by me during the most difficult times is something I will never forget and will always carry with me.
“Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life and I will always be one of you.” This club will always be my home, for me and for my family. Thank you for everything.
“Thanks to all of you, I will never walk alone.”
Your opinion: “Salah will be a big miss”
JG: He’s not the same player from last season. Given the poor performance of slots a few months ago, we think now is the right time. He is a legend of the YNWA club and league.
Steve Eze: The best winger in the league. He broke his league record in four fewer seasons than Wayne Rooney. An absolute phenomenon. I’ll miss you. Form does not last forever, but greatness does. Thank you, Mo, as always.
Andy: Maybe it’s time for Salah to leave at the end of the season, but he will be a big miss for this football club. There will definitely be a need for star additions next season.
Mike: That’s true for all parties, but he’s been a shadowy presence this season, and that hasn’t helped his lackluster performance. He will go down as one of our all-time greats, and he will leave with nothing but the gratitude of our fans.
