Moses Itauma’s reputation precedes him. Although he is only 21 years old and has only had 13 fights in his professional career, he is widely regarded as a future heavyweight champion.

In fact, he could become heavyweight champion in the not too distant future.

He is already highly ranked in the WBO and WBA and will face American challenger Jermaine Franklin on Saturday.

Franklin has distanced himself from both Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte, which will be a key indicator of whether Itauma is ready for his next world title shot.

British boxer Moses Itauma says if given the chance to fight for a world title, he would be “happy to take it”.

Itauma is determined to prove that he can live up to all the expectations placed on him.

“I not only want to prove to the fans and the public, but I also want to prove to myself that I can do what I think I can do,” Itauma told Sky Sports.

It’s the fight he’s been waiting for. “People think I’m resting, but I had an injury from boxing in August that I needed to recover from,” he said.

“I said I was ready for December. December came and I couldn’t find an opponent, so I found an opponent at the end of January. Then, while we were sparring, the incident happened.

“I’m not resting at all. I’m still going to the gym. I’m just not being under bright lights. But I’m still training. I’m not resting.”

“It’s the same thing you’ve always done, sparring, running, lifting weights, getting punched, hitting people, still having to adjust to Jermaine Franklin,” he added.

Itauma respects the challenge that lies ahead this weekend.

“It’s a good fight. I think Jermaine Franklin is a perfect match, but for him to be doing so well, I have my own question marks. I think that’s why I’m excited,” Itauma said.

“He’s durable, he’s good at the game, he throws his hands, he’s fast, so yeah, he’s very good.”
