Portugal has been confirmed to return to the F1 calendar in 2027 and 2028.

Portimao had previously been named on the F1 calendar for the 2020 and 2021 seasons amid a year-long reshuffle affected by the coronavirus.

The Portuguese Grand Prix will effectively replace the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, which has already been confirmed to be removed from the F1 calendar from 2026 onwards.

The 4.6km-long Portimão circuit is said to offer drivers a technical challenge with dramatic elevation changes, ending with a steep drop to the final right-hand corner before returning to the pit straight.

Portugal also has a prestigious history in Formula 1, with the first Grand Prix held in Porto in 1958 and weekend races held in Monsanto and Estoril over 75 years of Formula 1.

Most recently, Portimao was the circuit where Lewis Hamilton surpassed Michael Schumacher’s all-time victory record in 2021 with his 92nd victory. Hamilton also took the checkered flag in 2020 and is currently the only driver on the grid to have won at this circuit.

F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali said: “I am delighted that Portimao is returning to the F1 calendar and that the sport continues to ignite the passion of our amazing Portuguese fan base.”

“This circuit brings excitement on track from the first corner to the checkered flag, with an energy that gets fans out of their seats. Interest and demand for hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix is at an all-time high.”
