Michael van Gerwen has made a perfect start to the Premier League with a win in his opening game at Newcastle, but is looking to remain focused throughout his journey in the grueling format.

Van Gerwen was in great form at the Utilita Arena, sweeping away Stephen Bunting in the quarter-finals with six consecutive leg swings.

His power scoring and powerful double double then saw him win 6-2 over Luke Humphries in the semi-finals and end the night with a resounding 6-4 win over Dutch compatriot Jan van Veen in the final.

It was a marked change from 2025, when ‘The Green Machine’ failed to record a win on a nightly basis in the Premier League.

However, the seven-time Premier League champions have returned to the format in style and made a statement that they still have the game to beat anyone.

It was a strong night for MVG, but he is looking to stay focused on growing his game as a whole, capitalizing on the wins and having fun.

“It’s a very long road, but winning games is the best medicine to set the tone and everything,” van Gerwen said.

“As long as I keep fighting my battles, winning matches and having confidence, anything is possible.

“I love playing in the Premier League because I like playing in front of big crowds. Playing in front of thousands of people gives me great pleasure.”

Van Gerwen is an early top player and wants to stay at the front of the field.

“I don’t think (winning) is important in my mindset. I know I have a good mindset, but it’s always nice to be in front of them instead of chasing them,” he added.

“Now they have to go after me and make sure they fight back and make sure they can move up the table too.

“For me, it’s a bit of a relaxation, but don’t get me wrong, it’s going to be a long period of time, 15, 16 weeks, so I have to stay focused.”

Van Gerwen hits 114 for a 6-2 win over Luke Humphries in the semi-final.

In fact, the 36-year-old feels he won on night one without even finding his top level, but it’s eerie whether he can reach his old heights consistently over the course of 16 weeks.

“It’s definitely a good performance,” he added.

“Even without playing my A game, I won. I was consistent and got great finishes at the right moments.”

“I know I can do more, but this gives me confidence. Winning matches is the best medicine and this means a lot to me.”
