Charlie Hull and partner Michael Brennan were one of two teams to set a new scoring record at the Grant Thornton Invitational, posting a 17-under 55 on the first day of the mixed team event.

Lexi Thompson and Windham Clark also tied for first with 55s in the first round, but both teams only made three pars in the scramble format.

Hull and Brennan had birdie or eagle on 13 holes in a row at one stage, but had to settle for par on the 16th and 18th holes.

Brennan, who started the year on the PGA Tour of Americas and won the Bank of Utah Championship in exemption, will fill in for Daniel Berger, who was originally scheduled to partner Hull.

Thompson and Clark had birdies or eagles on nine of the final 10 holes, with the exception of the par-3 16th.

The 55s posted by both pairs shattered the previous record round by one in the mixed team event for PGA and LPGA Tour players that began three years ago.

Nelly Korda and partner Denny McCarthy are at 14 under par and three shots behind the lead.

They hold a two-stroke lead over Lauren Coughlin and Andrew Novak at 15 under. Rose Chan and Michael Kim, Nelly Korda and Denny McCarthy, and Jennifer Kupcho and Chris Gotterup will enter day two one spot behind.

Defending champions Jake Knapp and Patti Tavatanakit were 7 under through six holes and played the final seven holes at 5 under for a 59, four strokes off the pace.

Saturday’s format will shift to foursomes, and Sunday’s final round will be modified four-ball.

What is the Grant Thornton Invitational?

The 54-hole competition is a mixed team event, with 16 LPGA Tour players and 16 PGA Tour Professionals competing together in a unique, co-sanctioned tournament.

The three-day tournament offers three different formats of team play, allowing 32 players to compete for equal prize money and attention.

This will be the second consecutive year the tournament will be on the schedule since it began in 2023 as the first jointly sanctioned event between the LPGA Tour and PGA Tour since the 1999 J.C. Penney Classic.

Watch the Grant Thornton Invitational live all week on Sky Sports. Live coverage of the second round begins on Saturday at 7pm on Sky Sports Golf. Stream the PGA Tour and more now.

Book your round at the lowest price on one of 1,700 courses across the UK and Ireland
