A match between the best player of one tournament and the best player of another tournament. You might think it would be a pretty even contest. But that misses the rugby league context.
In Australia, the NRL is top-flight. They have a high salary cap, a huge budget, sports stars who are recognized everywhere they go, and a nationally known competition.
Next, turn your attention to Super League. These clubs exist at about a third of the salary cap of their Australian compatriots and are surrounded by big, high-profile football clubs fighting for attention at every turn.
Once again, they fought to grab the spotlight and then make sure it stayed with them.
Somehow, with grit, drive and determination, Hull KR came out ahead against the Broncos and thwarted what looked like an incredible comeback to win 30-24 and become the fifth Super League team in history to win the World Club Challenge.

They were shattered and only their hearts crossed the line. The normally cheeky Mikey Lewis lay on the halfway line as victory was secured.

Remarkably, Hull KR became the third consecutive Super League team to win the World Club Challenge. This is a shocking result.
First, St Helens caused a stir when they played Penrith on Australian soil and won with a dramatic golden point drop goal. It conveyed the message that “Super League clubs have something to say.”
In response, Penrith said, “Okay, I’ll come to you now.” Wigan defeated Wigan in 2024 to host the Grand Final, Challenge Cup, League Leaders Shield and World Club Challenge.
With the Panthers’ reign over the NRL coming to an end, it was the Broncos’ turn to steal the trophy from England and take it on a 24-hour journey to the other side of the world.

Their head coach Michael McGuire is no stranger to Super League. He was in charge of the Wigan team that won the league in 2010.
His Broncos team is famous for its comeback, winning every game in the 2025 Finals.

Brisbane Broncos close the gap on Hull KR with back-to-back goals from Dean Marriner and Patrick Carrigan.
When the Kotoni Stags were up 30-24 with four minutes remaining, the stadium was engulfed in a sea of red.
Somehow, despite it looking like Brisbane would break through again, Hull KR had joined an elite club when they were knocked on with seconds remaining.
It was an unforgettable World Club Challenge.
Indeed, Hull KR’s players carried the weight of the tournament on their shoulders.

Jez Litten said victory in the World Club Challenge was a victory for England Rugby League after Hull KR defeated Brisbane Broncos.
“It was unbelievable. That was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever been a part of,” said Jez Litten.
“Everyone worked so hard for each other. It was great to play with these guys against a team like that. We scrambled our way and it was unbelievable.”
“I’m proud to have done this in the England game. We’re always a little behind the Australians but here we’re proud. We’re playing a strong brand of rugby. It’s not just about us, it’s for English rugby as a whole.”

The challenge now for Super League is how to turn waves into tsunamis, moments into movements, and fleeting dalliances in the spotlight into remarkable changes in the sport.
Super League has had moments like this before, but it’s difficult to capitalize on them. But something is different this time. That means Hull KR can travel to Las Vegas to take on Leeds Rhinos. So for a week, the attention of the entire sport will be on it.
They can step into NRL territory and say, “We just beat your champions. We can do it against your best.”
That in itself is a statement.

Emotional Mikey Lewis is looking to rebuild trust with Hull KR after being found guilty in the defeat to York Knights.
Hull KR head coach Willie Peters said there was a “responsibility” to put on another show in Sin City.
When St Helens defeated Penrith in 2023, the victory was noted as a monumental change for English rugby league. It meant taking back responsibility for the World Club Challenge.
The challenge now is to maintain a high reputation and a competition that shows why it’s important and what better place to do it than Allegiant Stadium.
St Helens played their part and had their moment in the spotlight. Wigan Warriors have played their part and had their moment in the spotlight. Hal KR did his part and had his moment in the spotlight.
Super League now needs to capitalize on that spotlight and shine the light on itself again in a week’s time.
