Toby Sexton kicks Catalans Dragons to a long-awaited Super League win as Leigh Leopards continue to struggle in the new season at Leigh Sports Village.

The French side, who suffered a humiliating defeat at home to St Helens last week, cruised to a 22-16 victory with halfback Sexton contributing with two penalties and three conversions.

It meant further misery for Leigh, who went into the game desperate to spark a struggling side with a nine-try win over neighbors Wigan last week.

There were early positive signs for the home side as Catalan winger Tommy Makinson was forced off with an injury during the warm-up and Ines Senior made a fine clearance to feed Tesi Niu to open the scoring.

Adam Cooke’s kick put Leigh up to six points before Harvey Wilson charged in from close range and Sexton’s first contribution saw the teams level at 6-6 at the interval.

Charlie Staines and Lewis Dodd’s second half tries were canceled out by Senior and Niu respectively, Leopards cheered and hung on, but it was Sexton’s kick that made the difference.

Dod try it.

Lewis Dodd scores a brilliant breakaway try for Catalonia Dragons against Lee Leopards!

His accuracy saved the Catalans a second penalty with two minutes remaining, allowing the French side to erase the memory of last weekend’s heartbreaking defeat at home.

There’s a lot to think about for Leigh coach Adrian Lam after his team, which reached the play-off semi-finals last year, lost again to a team that has struggled with just one win in their first four games.

Warrington defeat newly promoted York

Josh Thewlis and Sam Stone each scored two tries as Warrington secured a convincing 38-30 win over newly promoted York, extending their unbeaten start to the new Super League season.

Sam Burgess’ side jumped out to an early 16-point lead before the home side fought back to take an 18-16 lead and set the tone for a remarkable, error-filled encounter at the LNER Community Stadium.

Wire got off to a good start with tries from Stone, Thewlis and Kai Taylor-Rae, and two kicks from Mark Snead looked like it would be the simplest of nights for the high-flying visitors.

However, the Knights had already shown the kind of battle they have seen in defeating the likes of Hull KR this season, with Mark Applegarth’s side taking the lead just before the half-hour mark.

Ben Jones-Bishop, Denib Balmforth and Toa Mata’afa all crossed and Danny Richardson’s three conversions rounded off the comeback in front of a raucous home crowd.

But Stone’s second try, scored by Snead, gave Wire a four-point half-time advantage and the momentum shifted back in the other direction.

Further tries from George Williams and Ben Currie extended Warrington’s lead to 14 points, and York regained momentum with grandstand goals from efforts from former wiremen Paul Vaughan and Liam Harris.

York felt they had a chance to win, but it was Warrington who ultimately made the game safe, with the impressive Stone sending Thewlis into the corner and Snide’s kick effectively canceling out York’s remaining hopes.
