Coventry took a big step towards the Premier League by defeating Swansea 3-0.
Frank Lampard’s Championship leaders had the crates rattled twice in the first half, but they took full control back with three goals in 11 minutes before the break.
Brandon Thomas Asante and Matt Grimes made their first return to the club, where they played 333 games in 10 years before leaving in January 2025, and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s goal threw the away team into chaos.

With Coventry’s closest challengers Middlesbrough, Ipswich and Millwall all drawing early, it felt like a pivotal day for the Sky Blues in their pursuit of first-class football.
Coventry have a nine-point advantage over second-placed Middlesbrough with seven games remaining. Ipswich and Millwall are two points further behind after the draw at Portman Road.
Swansea have dropped three places to 14th place and appear to have little to play for this season.
The expected shootout between the championship’s two leading scorers, Zan Vipotnik and Haji Wright, did not materialize.
Wright was not in the Coventry squad due to a groin problem, but it gave Vipotnik, who scored 17 goals, one more than his American rival, an opportunity to boost his bid for the division’s Golden Boot.
The match started at a frenetic pace with Josh Tymon hitting Coventry’s crossbar with a shot and Ellis Sims hitting Swansea goalkeeper Laurence Vigroux with a volley from close range.
Both men continued their pursuit, but after 32 minutes Ben Cabango dangled a leg over Efron Mason-Clarke.
The Coventry forward might have slipped on closer inspection, but referee Stephen Martin didn’t hesitate and Thomas Assante smashed the penalty under the expansive Vigouroux.

Gonzalo Franco could have leveled the score with a header from Uhm Ji-sung’s cross, but the Swansea fans, who booed Grimes throughout, were about to receive a nasty blowback after 38 minutes.
Cameron Burgess’ deflected clearance looped into the air and was met by Grimes from 20 yards out, his left-footed volley hitting the post on the way.
Grimes raised his hand as if to apologize to Swansea fans and did not celebrate until he was mopped up by jubilant team-mates.
Five minutes later, Lampard punched again when Frank Onyeka’s cross reached Sakamoto, his shot deflected by Ethan Galbraith and past Vigouroux at the near post.
“We’re going to win the league,” Coventry fans sang, and in the second period few disputed that idea.
Vigrue put his foot out to deny Sims, and Thomas Asante nearly sent the rebound flying with a powerful shot while lying on the floor.
Former Swansea loanee Karl Rushworth made a brilliant stop from Melker Videl and the unmarked Vipotnik sliced wide in the closing stages to end the home side’s day.

Swansea.com The first 30 minutes at the stadium was a one-way affair in favor of the hosts. However, by the time the half-time whistle blew, they were trailing by three points.
It’s the difference between being at the top of the tree and languishing in the middle of the table. The result showed why Coventry are comfortable in the top flight and all but guaranteed automatic promotion to the Premier League.
The visitors made the most of their half-chances, while Josh Tymon and Melker Weidel had some great chances. It wasn’t particularly clear on the second and third goals, but who cares when the ball goes into the back of the net?
This completely surprised the home set of fans and players, with Coventry not even having to come out of neutral, let alone first gear. This will be followed by international break, but for manager Frank Lampard, the luxury of not having to focus on his players in the second half is exactly what he could have dreamed of.
A late kick-off is often difficult, but the result earlier in the day ensured that the league leaders punished their chasers, as any good champion should. It’s another small message to send to their rivals, but they’ve made it clear so far that the message may not even reach those behind them.

“I’m really happy with the performance. It was a very tricky game here against Swansea. We were unbeaten in a lot of games, a very high-pressing team, good rotation, good ball circulation. Everything felt like a really difficult game.”
“But I thought we handled the game brilliantly, the way the players worked on every part, the way the players approached things tactically, the cohesion, the quality that we started to see once the game settled down a little bit from the beginning. I’m really happy with every little thing.”
On being top of the table and needing just 11 points for promotion: “I’m glad we had previous Championship experience and we learned from it in the sense of how tough it is from week to week. You’re going to lose some games and you’re going to have your moments because it’s such a test of endurance.”
“And I’m probably calmer now than before. I’m calmer now because of certain results and performances, because I know what it is.
“I try to stay calm through it all, try to shut out the noise, stay positive and always try to focus on the next game, training and development.
“We are not there yet. We have seven games to go. We have won a lot of points and we are in a very good position. We will continue to do the same thing as we do every day.”
