Zimbabwe defeated Australia by 23 runs in the T20 Cricket World Cup in Colombo on Friday.
Australia won the toss and elected to play against Zimbabwe, who produced their first major upset of the tournament with a score of 169-2.
Setting a target of 170, he took back-to-back wickets in the final stages of the match, ending Australia’s run chase. That included Tony Muyonga, who leapt through the air to make a spectacular diving catch to beat Ben Dwarshuis.
Australia were bowled out for just 146 in 19.3 overs, with Blessing Muzarabani taking 4-17 and Brad Evans taking 3-23.
Matt Renshaw, playing in his first T20 World Cup, scored 65 off 44 balls and Glenn Maxwell had 31 hits off 32 deliveries, but Mzarabani and Evans took four wickets in the powerplay and did enough damage up front to lead Zimbabwe to their second successive Group B win.
Opening batsman Brian Bennett hit an unbeaten 64 off 56 balls to lead Zimbabwe to 169-2. Tadiwanashe Malmani (35) and Ryan Burr (35) also made useful contributions, while captain Sikandar Raza’s late acceleration (25 off 13 deliveries) was key.
It was the first T20 World Cup match between the two countries since Zimbabwe’s stunning five-wicket victory over Australia in the inaugural tournament in 2007.
Travis Head led the Australian team while captain Mitchell Marsh was absent as he continued to recover from a testicular injury. Marsh suffered an injury near the nets on the eve of Australia’s Group B opener and missed the 67-run win against Ireland.
