Boston Common Golf, led by Rory McIlroy, finally picked up its first TGL win with Michael Thorbjornsen’s 7-5 victory over 2025 semifinalist Los Angeles.
Boston went winless in TGL’s inaugural season, finishing last of the five teams, but has successfully started its second campaign at SoFiCenter.
Thorbjornsen, who stepped up to play alongside McIlroy and Keegan Bradley in the absence of Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama, clinched Boston’s victory with a 15-foot eagle putt on the final hole in a singles match against Saheeth Segala.
McIlroy faced Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose in singles and birdied the 10th hole to give Boston the point. Earlier, when the hammer was taken, he sank a tricky putt to give his team a 4-3 lead.
The showdown between McIlroy and Rose brought back memories of last April’s Masters play-off, when the Northern Irishman won and clinched the Grand Slam of his career.
McIlroy: “It’s been a long time since we won”
“It’s been a long time coming for Keegan (Bradley) and me to get a win,” McIlroy said after Boston’s win at Florida on Friday.
“There were a lot of quality shots, a lot of birdies and eagles, hammers thrown, bullets dodged. It was a lot of back and forth. It was certainly fun to play.”
Thorbjornsen, the first TGL player to make a four-putt from outside 10 feet in a match, hit a 17-foot shot on the 12th against Seagala to give Boston a 6-5 lead, but his 15-foot shot came shortly after the team’s first win.
Thor Bjornsen, 24, saw TGL’s first shot go into the bunker while playing a triple, and from that point on he was impressive.
