Uber deploys driverless robotaxis in Abu Dhabi

Unmanned WeRide robotaxis for Uber.

Uber Wednesday rolls out fully autonomous driving in fourth market, partners to launch service in Abu Dhabi we ridea Chinese self-driving car company.

The ride-hailing company said the launch in the UAE capital will be the first driverless robotaxi service in the Middle East. In the U.S., Uber already offers robotaxi services in Austin, Phoenix, and Atlanta. of the alphabet Waymo.

Passengers in Abu Dhabi can book a WeRide robo-taxi when requesting an UberX or Uber Comfort ride, the ride-hailing company said.

WeRide, which is listed on Nasdaq, partnered with Uber in September 2024 and began offering operator-driven self-driving services in Abu Dhabi in December last year. Uber and WeRide also debuted robotaxis with safety operators in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in October. Uber announced in May that it plans to expand its WeRide service to 15 more cities over the next five years, including in Europe.

Uber has been betting big on self-driving car technology through partnerships in recent years.

Uber began offering robotaxi services in Austin and Atlanta earlier this year and in Phoenix by the end of 2023. The company signed a six-year robotaxi contract with the electric car maker in July. clear and AV startup Nuro.

Meanwhile, WeRide has launched a fully driverless robotaxi service in Beijing and Guangzhou, China, according to its website.

Uber hasn’t disclosed how it will split robotaxi profits with its partners.

Competitors are also readily adopting this technology. lift In September, it announced a deal with Waymo to launch robotaxis in Nashville next year.

Uber said its self-driving cars in Abu Dhabi will operate in specific areas of Yas Island. Passengers can increase their chances of getting into a robotaxi by choosing the self-driving option. During your ride, in-car support is available through the app and in-car tablet.
