Consumers probably think of Uber as a ride-hailing or food delivery company. But in the eyes of CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber is really just a giant codebase with engineers who are “literally the builders of the company.” In fact, Uber engineers have even gone so far as to replace Khosrowshahi with a chatbot to ask him questions in preparation for meetings with upper management.

That’s according to an interview Khosrowshahi gave this week on Stephen Bartlett’s podcast, The Diary of a CEO.

“One of my team members told me that some teams are building Dara AI and are presenting to Dara AI basically in preparation for presenting to me,” Khosrowshahi said on the podcast. “As you can imagine, by the time something comes to me, the preparations are done and the slide deck meetings are beautifully polished. So they deploy Dara AI to orchestrate the preparations.”

Business Insider first reported the details.

Khosrowshahi said that while about 90% of Uber’s software engineers utilize AI in their work, about 30% are “power users” of AI tools, and the company has completely rethought its architecture.

“They’re making the bricks that go into the system, and they’re the architects of what the system should look like,” he said.

Khosrowshahi added, “This is really changing their productivity in a way I’ve never seen before.”
