Tata Electronics retains US chip designer intel The company is being eyed as a potential customer as a unit of Mumbai-based conglomerate Tata Group works to expand India’s electronics and semiconductor supply chain.

Under the MoU, the two companies will explore manufacturing and packaging Intel products for the local market at Tata Electronics’ future factories.

Intel and Tata will also evaluate ways to quickly scale customized artificial intelligence PC solutions for Indian consumers and businesses.

Tata said in a press release on Monday that the partnership is a pivotal step towards developing a resilient India-based electronics and semiconductor supply chain.

“Together with Intel, we are well-positioned to drive the expansion of our technology ecosystem, provide cutting-edge semiconductor and system solutions, and capture the large-scale and growing AI opportunity,” said N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, the principal investment holding company of Tata companies.

Founded in 2020, Tata Electronics has invested billions of dollars in building India’s first pure-play foundry. Tata Electronics said the facility will manufacture semiconductor products for the AI, automotive, computing and data storage industries.

The company is also building a new assembly and testing facility.

Despite being one of the world’s largest consumers of electronics, India lacks chip design and manufacturing capacity.

But the Indian government is working to change that as part of an effort to reduce dependence on chip imports and capture a larger share of the global electronics market, which is shifting away from China.

At least 10 semiconductor projects have been approved under New Delhi’s India Semiconductor Mission, with a cumulative investment of over $18 billion.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said the partnership with Intel is a “tremendous opportunity” to rapidly grow in one of the world’s fastest-growing computer markets, driven by rising demand for PCs and rapid adoption of AI across India.
