OpenAI on Wednesday announced a Pro Chat GPT tier that increases the limits of Codex, OpenAI’s artificial intelligence-powered coding assistant, aiming to compete with Anthropic’s popular Claude Code.
In an announcement posted at
“The Plus plan remains the best plan at $20 for consistent, daily use of Codex, and the new $100 Pro tier provides a more accessible upgrade path for heavy daily use,” the company wrote in a post on X.
The new tiers bring the number of ChatGPT subscription tiers to five for personal use: Free, Go, Plus, and now two Pro tiers. OpenAI already had a Pro tier that cost $200 per month.
Anthropic, which made Claude Code publicly available in May 2025, has a similar subscription tier model with four pricing tiers starting with free. The highest tiers, up to 5x ($100 per month) and up to 20x ($200 per month), have higher usage limits for Claude Codes than the Pro subscription.
Coding assistants are rapidly gaining popularity because they can automate tasks and bug fixes for software developers. The tool’s run-rate revenue exceeded $2.5 billion in February, an increase of more than 100% since the beginning of 2026, CNBC previously reported.
OpenAI launched Codex last April and made it widely available in October.
On Tuesday, CEO Sam Altman posted on X that Codex has 3 million weekly users and that the company will reset usage limits for every 1 million users until the platform reaches 10 million users.
As AI coding tools grow in popularity, the company released a standalone Codex app for Apple computers in February to attract more users.
