OpenAI on Monday released a standalone app for its artificial intelligence-powered coding assistant, Codex, temporarily available to all ChatGPT users. apple computer.

OpenAI says the new app has a simple interface and is designed to act as a “command center” that allows software developers to easily manage multiple AI agents at once. An AI agent is a tool that can independently complete tasks, such as writing code, on your behalf.

AI coding assistants have exploded in popularity over the past year, with more than 1 million developers using Codex in the past month, according to OpenAI. The company first launched Codex in April and made the product generally available in October.

The new Codex app is part of OpenAI’s continued efforts to separate users and market share from rivals like Anthropic and Cursor, which offer unique and compelling offerings for developers.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a Friday press conference that the Codex app is “our most beloved internal product ever.”

“What we’re using at OpenAI these days is absolutely amazing to us,” Altman said. “I was so excited that I stayed up late and made all kinds of things myself.”

OpenAI says that within the Codex app, agents run in separate threads organized by project, and users can see agent changes within those threads. Agents can run in parallel, and developers can collaborate with them when working on long-running tasks.

The Codex app also includes a library of “skills” such as image generation to help agents complete tasks beyond just generating code, the company said.

Access to Codex is typically included with your ChatGPT subscription. This means Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu subscribers can use it to purchase additional credits as needed.

However, with the app’s release on Monday, OpenAI said it will also make Codex available to free users and lower-cost Go subscription tiers for a limited time. This means that all ChatGPT users can use Codex in all available interfaces, including apps for Apple computers.

OpenAI said it will temporarily double rate limits across paid plans to give existing Codex users a better deal.

“The ability to input new ideas as quickly as possible is the limit of what it can build on,” Altman said. “It’s pretty cool to see.
