The United States and Israel have launched a major attack against Iran, which President Donald Trump has said could waste Iran’s military, obliterate its nuclear program and even bring down its regime.

In a video on Truth Social, President Trump accused Iran of denying “every opportunity to abandon its nuclear ambitions” and said the United States “cannot take it anymore.”

The airstrikes targeted multiple cities across Iran, including the capital Tehran.

In retaliation, Iran said it had targeted U.S. military facilities in the Gulf country where U.S. military bases are located and sent a barrage of missiles toward Israel.

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s residence in central Tehran was attacked, and Israel confirmed late Saturday that the supreme leader had been killed, according to two Israeli officials familiar with the matter. The news came shortly after Iran insisted its leaders were “safe and sound.”

This satellite image from Airbus shows black smoke billowing from Iran’s supreme leader’s residence in the capital Tehran on Saturday. The damage seen in the images appears to indicate that several buildings at the compound were attacked after the United States and Israel launched a joint attack.

Smoke rises above Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei's compound in Tehran, Iran, on Saturday, February 28th.

As of Saturday night local time, Iran’s internet connectivity rate had fallen to about 4% after the airstrike.

According to Flightradar24 data, flights over Iran and other Middle Eastern countries have virtually disappeared since the strikes. This figure compares air traffic a week ago to Saturday night traffic local time.

Christian Edwards, Karina Tsui, Tim Lister, Gianluca Mezzofiore and Lauren Kent contributed to this report.
