Wikimedia announced new deals with several artificial intelligence companies in a blog post Thursday. Amazon, Meta and Perplexity as part of the company’s 25th anniversary celebration.
Through a new partnership under Wikimedia Enterprises, companies will pay Wikipedia to use its data to develop and train AI models instead of web scraping.

“All of these organizations rely on Wikimedia Enterprise to integrate human-managed knowledge into their platforms at scale,” Wikimedia said in a release.
The technology company joins existing partners Ecosia, Pleias and ProRata. googlewas one of Wikimedia Enterprise’s first partners in 2022.
“Wikipedia knowledge powers generative AI chatbots, search engines, voice assistants, and more,” a Wikimedia Foundation spokesperson told CNBC. “The long-term future of AI and technology companies depends on incubation projects like Wikipedia, because Wikipedia generates the human knowledge they rely on.”
The AI boom has brought data rights into the spotlight, with Wikipedia; reddit.
Last year, Elon Musk launched Grokipedia, an AI-powered rival to Wikipedia.
Mr. Musk promoted it as reducing prejudice and “counter-wokeness.” xAI’s Large-Scale Language Model All Grokipedia entries named after Grok are generated by AI models.
