Matt Weston won gold in the men’s skeleton, earning Team GB’s first medal of the Winter Olympics.

Weston, the current Skeleton World Champion, took the lead overnight, finishing +0.88 seconds faster than the other competitors in all four heats in 3:43.33.

On his fourth and final run, he became the first British man to win a gold medal in skeleton and was greeted with jubilant cheers from his fiancée and family in the stands.

“(It) means everything. It means a lot to me personally. I’ve worked hard for this,” Weston said after winning the gold medal.

“Everyone back home, my fiancé, my family, my friends, everyone who has sacrificed so much for me to be here. I’ve missed funerals, birthdays, everything for this moment, and it feels amazing.”

“Even if you’re not part of my close circle, if you play in the National Lottery you’re supporting me too. Thank you so much and I hope I’ve made you proud.”

Another Team GB medal hopeful, Marcus Wyatt, finished 9th in a total time of 3:45:77.
