Asia-Pacific markets opened mixed on Monday as investors assessed the latest developments in soaring oil prices and the escalating US-Iran conflict.

U.S. oil prices have soared above $100 per barrel as the Trump administration considers a military strike on Tehran’s Kharg Island, a strategically important base often referred to as Iran’s “oil lifeline.”

Goldman Sachs estimates that the soaring energy prices caused by the Iran war could cause global GDP to decline by about 0.3% over the next year, and the headline inflation rate to rise by about 0.5 to 0.6%.

Higher natural gas prices are expected to add further inflationary pressures and growth headwinds, particularly in Europe and Asia, with risks skewing towards a larger impact if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, the central bank said in a note on Sunday.

Stock futures rose slightly as Wall Street tried to recover from another losing week.
