Design tool Figma today released new AI-powered image editing features, including the ability to delete and separate objects, and enlarge images.

The company says these features eliminate the hassle of exporting images to other tools, editing them, and importing them back. He added that while generative models like Nano Banana are good for creating images, users often need deep editing tools that work without text prompts.

Figma has improved the selection lasso tool. This allows you to select objects, delete them, separate them, and move them around. The image retains its background and other characteristics, such as color, as you move around the object. Users can also select objects and adjust elements such as lighting, shadows, color, and focus.

The company is also introducing image enhancements to its design suite. This feature is useful if you need to tailor your creative to a specific format and enter background or other details. For example, create web and mobile banners from 1×1 images. This eliminates the need to constantly crop images or adjust elements within them.

In addition to adding these features, Figma also consolidates all image editing tools into one toolbar for easy access. You can use this toolbar to select objects or parts of images, change the background color, and add annotations and text. The company says removing backgrounds is one of the most common actions on the platform, which is why it’s featured prominently in the new toolbar.

Rivals like Adobe and Canva have been removing objects for several years. Figma can finally offer these features.

The company says the new image editing features are available in Figma Design and Draw, and will be available across Figma tools next year.

The release of Figma comes on the same day that Adobe made some of these features available to users within ChatGPT. Figma was one of the app’s launch partners and called on ChatGPT in October. It is unclear whether these new features will be available to users using Figma within OpenAI’s tools.
