Manchester United have a long-term interest in Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The club are not actively looking to sign a new striker during this period, but if the French forward becomes available he could be someone they consider more seriously.
Mateta, a key figure in Oliver Glasner’s Palace team, is due to enter the final year of his contract in July and attracted interest from clubs last summer.
Sky Sports News previously reported that Palace rejected bids worth up to £50m for Mateta from Champions League clubs in the last period.
Tottenham Hotspur made a late inquiry before signing Randal Kolo Muani on loan from Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day, but no bid was made.
Atalanta, AC Milan, Juventus and several other Premier League clubs were also linked with the 28-year-old.
Sky Sports News has already reported that United’s main focus is next summer window, where signing a new defensive midfielder will be a priority.
United keep an eye on centre-back jackets
Latest updates from Sky Sports News’ Amal Mehta and Dan Khan:
United may prioritize signing a defensive midfielder in the summer window, but a centre-back could also be on the table, with Sky Sports News exclusively revealing they are one of the clubs monitoring Stade Rennes central defender Jeremy Jacquet.
Several clubs have expressed interest in signing the 20-year-old, but a move in January would be difficult. However, the club could accelerate things if another club replaces Jaquet this month.
Sky Sports News reported in August 2025 that Palace had shown a strong interest in the France Under-21 international, but that Rennes wanted to keep Jaquet for at least the 2025-26 season. The defender then signed a contract extension until 2029.
Is United’s young winger ready to leave?
Latest updates from Sky Sports News’ Adrian Kajumba and Dan Khan:
Meanwhile, United are considering selling young winger Sam Mather to Turkish side Kayserispor.
Kayserispor have been keen to sign the academy product since the summer period when they ran out of time to finalize a deal.
A formal offer has been submitted with the aim of signing the England youth international in January, and United are considering a move.
Mather was part of the United squad that won the club’s last FA Youth Cup in 2022, along with Coby Mainu and Alejandro Garnacho.
Mather has not been able to progress to the first team at Old Trafford as his development has been hampered by injuries, but he gained senior experience during loan spells at Rochdale and Tranmere.
