Altman and Amodei share awkward moment at India’s massive AI summit

The ongoing India AI Impact Summit, which was supposed to be a moment of solidarity for global innovation, turned out to be an awkward one instead. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged speakers at the event to join hands in a show of solidarity, all the leaders on stage responded. Except for OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, who were largely handicapped.

As the leaders of two major labs in the AI race, it goes without saying that Altman and Amodei are fierce competitors. That conflict has only intensified in recent months. After OpenAI announced that it would introduce ads to ChatGPT, Anthropic attacked OpenAI with several ads during the Super Bowl and declared that it would not introduce ads to Claude.

Altman quickly fired back, calling Anthropic “dishonest” and “authoritarian.”

“We clearly have no intention of advertising in the way ‘Anthropic’ depicts. We’re not stupid and we know our users will reject it,” he wrote at the time.

Altman and Amodei were in India this week to attend the AI Summit in New Delhi, where a number of AI-related investments, features and products were announced. OpenAI said it is partnering with IT giant TCS to open two new offices in India and roll out tools for higher education. Anthropic also opened an office in India and partnered with Infosys to bring AI tools internally and externally.
