Anthropic suffered widespread disruption Monday morning, with thousands of users reporting problems accessing the Claude service.

The outage appears to affect Claude.ai as well as Claude Code, but the company says the Claude API is working as intended. Most users encounter an error similar to the following screenshot when they try to log in.

“The issues we are seeing are related to Claude.ai and login/logout passes,” the company’s status page says. Anthropic has not yet detailed the cause of the outage, but the company said it has identified the issue and is implementing a fix.

The disruption comes on the heels of an influx of users to Claude, which appears to have benefited from attention regarding the company’s difficult negotiations with the Department of Defense. The chatbot app has long languished below the top 20, but this weekend it overtook its biggest rival, ChatGPT, to the top of the App Store charts.

U.S. President Donald Trump last week directed federal agencies to stop using Anthropic products following a dispute over safeguards that prevent the Pentagon from using AI models for domestic mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has designated the company as a supply chain threat, but Anthropic says it has not yet received formal notification.
