Important points

Robbie Mitchnick, BlackRock’s head of digital assets, said in an interview with CNBC that heightened U.S. fiscal concerns are driving investor demand for alternative stores of value such as Bitcoin and gold. “Debt and deficit levels are a big concern for the market,” he said, noting that when such concerns return to the headlines, they tend to benefit “assets like Bitcoin and gold.” He said the Clarity Act, which has stalled in Congress, is “not that important” for Bitcoin. Toward the broader cryptocurrency industry

Bitcoin’s recent rally has put its role as a hedge against financial risks back in the spotlight, confirming Robbie Mitchnick’s long-held view that crypto assets can help diversify portfolios and are more than just risky assets. BlackRock’s head of digital assets said in an interview with CNBC that Bitcoin’s recent rally is consistent with the flagship cryptocurrency’s history of rebounding whenever investor sentiment is particularly weak, and reflects Bitcoin’s long-term risk and return dynamics relative to stocks and other traditional assets. “Equities and other asset classes have had a pretty rough time in recent weeks…bond markets have been volatile, and Bitcoin…has seen a pretty significant rally due to its unique properties and being seen as an emerging store of value,” the Stanford MBA said. IBIT 3M Mountain iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) – Past 3 Months Bitcoin is trading below $80,000 after a sharp rally last week that saw it post its biggest three-day rally since 2023. The move comes amid renewed concerns about the size of the U.S. debt and deficit, with investors such as Stanley Druckenmiller and Ray Dalio warning that the U.S. fiscal situation could pose a structural threat to markets. Mitchnick said such concerns are driving increased interest in bitcoin and gold as investors focus on the purchasing power of fiat currencies and seek alternative stores of value. “Debt and deficit levels are a big concern for markets,” Mitchnick said, adding that when these concerns return to the headlines, they tend to benefit “assets like Bitcoin and gold.” This macro context may also help explain why Bitcoin continues to rise even as enthusiasm for the Clarity Act, a bill aimed at streamlining the structure of the cryptocurrency market, has waned. This action is “less significant” for Bitcoin than other parts of the cryptocurrency industry and the crypto asset market. While Bitcoin has already accepted many of the necessary regulations, other crypto areas such as decentralized finance stand to benefit even more from legislation. “While the market in general and many participants in the ecosystem see regulatory clarity as having the potential for further upside, they are not necessarily counting on it or considering it in their base case today,” Mitchnick said. “I don’t have a view on what to make of the latest status of that process,” but developments on Capitol Hill are “certainly something we’ll be watching and looking forward to.”
