President Xi Jinping said at the BRICS bloc summit in New Delhi that China will take the lead in promoting artificial intelligence cooperation and development among developing countries.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, President Xi said China will pioneer the establishment of a BRICS AI open source community, support cooperation in the development and application of large-scale language models, hold AI seminars and training courses, and build an open AI ecosystem.
Mr. Xi also said that China will work to establish a BRICS digital ecosystem cloud platform, and will also work to implement digital skills training, technology exchanges and industrial cooperation. It also proposed the creation of a BRICS Engineer Training Alliance and a youth exchange program for science, technology and innovation.
XI’s proposal comes as the AI sector is booming, with companies releasing increasingly powerful models at a breakneck pace. AI itself has also come under intense scrutiny, with one researcher who worked at both OpenAI and Anthropic saying this week that many working in the industry believe AI could wipe out humanity by the end of the decade. Mr. Xi did not address the ongoing debate over the safety of AI.
BRICS was founded in 2009 to counter Western dominance and initially consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. It eventually grew to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
