apple on Monday released a new version of its iPhone software called iOS 27, which includes the company’s redesigned Siri AI personal assistant, before the latest iPhones hit stores this week.
Apple says the new Siri AI is in beta and users will need to opt in through the Settings app, but they may need to add their name to a waitlist before accessing it.
Apple is positioning its upcoming iPhone 18 models as ideal for artificial intelligence due to their faster chips and the personal data they store, such as calendars and texts.
“What’s really personal is personal intelligence,” Apple CEO John Ternas said last week at the company’s first iPhone launch event since taking over from Tim Cook on September 1. “iPhone is at the center of an incredible ecosystem of intelligent features and experiences that work seamlessly across the products you use every day,” he said.
Apple first announced its Siri AI assistant in June. The company’s AI-powered version of Siri, due to be released in 2024, was delayed last year.
Comparison to Frontier AI from companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and more googleApple uses smaller models that it has developed and can often run on chips in phones and laptops. However, for more complex Siri AI queries, Apple has something called private cloud computing that uses Google Cloud infrastructure. Nvidia and intel Chips. Apple also uses Google’s Gemini to build its own model.
Apple said that certain Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features that utilize cloud servers are subject to daily usage limits, and that increased limits “will be available for a fee in the future.”
“Daily limits may vary depending on feature, request complexity, system demand, system policy, and other factors,” Apple said in a release.
Apple’s new Siri uses an extensive language model to search for your local personal data, including texts, emails, and calendar events. For example, you can search a user’s messages to find addresses, recipes, and instructions. You can also answer common questions and search the web.
Siri AI can also be accessed through the new Siri app, which saves your previous queries. Compared to Apple’s older versions of Siri, users can reply to the Assistant’s responses, making the software feel more conversational.
Siri AI is available in English, with support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish coming next month. Apple said it will not initially be available in the EU or China for regulatory reasons.
