The U.S. trade deficit widened sharply in August due to an influx of goods related to developments in artificial intelligence and capricious import tariffs, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday.

Imports increased by 4.3% in the month, bringing the total imbalance to $105.6 billion. This marks a 13.7% increase from July and beats the Dow Jones consensus estimate of $102 billion.

It was also the largest deficit since March 2025, when the largest deficit on record was recorded just before “Emancipation Day” when President Donald Trump announced “reciprocal” tariffs on America’s trading partners.

Although the monthly total increased, the year-to-date deficit was $138.2 billion, down nearly 20% from the same period last year.

“While higher prices are exaggerating the move, net trade will still be a drag on gross domestic product growth in the third quarter,” said Oren Krachkin, financial economist at Nationwide. “We see this as a sign of strong domestic demand rather than economic weakness.”

As a general rule, imports are deducted from gross domestic product calculations. However, if imports reflect strong demand and consumption, they can be offset elsewhere.

Despite this, Goldman Sachs lowered its tracking forecast for economic growth in the third quarter to 3.1%, a 0.3 percentage point lower than previously expected. The Atlanta Fed’s GDP Now Tracker lowered its forecast to 3.7% following the trade report, down 0.1 percentage point from its previous update.
