Treasury yields stabilize, President Trump takes diplomatic stance toward Iran

Bond yields were mostly steady Friday morning as investors digested the latest Treasury bid and President Donald Trump’s pledge not to attack Iran until after the midterm elections.

The move came as U.S. Treasury yields fell during pre-market trading and hit their highest level since 2002 earlier in the week.

President Trump struck a more diplomatic tone Thursday, saying the United States would not launch any attack against Iran before next month’s midterm elections, amid a clear decline in approval ratings for the Middle East war.

Earlier, Federal Reserve Chairman Christopher Waller suggested further rate hikes may be needed to address stubborn inflation, which has exceeded the Fed’s 2% target for more than five years. On Thursday, the Treasury Department sold $22 billion in 30-year bonds, with indirect bidders including central banks winning more than 72% of the winning bid, higher than the average of 68% over the past 10 bids. The department sold $39 billion in 10-year bonds on Wednesday.

No major economic data is expected to be released on Friday.
