U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Mark Wayne Mullin (C) speaks during a press conference at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) headquarters in Washington, DC, on October 9, 2026. Director Marin, along with other ICE officials, spoke out against the sanctuary city policy, citing the shooting death of a man by federal immigration agents in New York City yesterday.

Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullin said Friday that the agency will not suspend operations in New York after an ICE agent in the Bronx fatally shot a man who was in a car with a 5-year-old child.

Thursday afternoon’s shootings prompted New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani and Gov. Cathy Hochul to slam ICE and say they have called on Marin and President Donald Trump to immediately cease operations in the state.

“We’re not going to pause enforcement,” Marin said at a news conference Friday morning, aimed at pushing back against growing criticism of recent ICE shootings.

“Sorry, that’s not true,” Marin said. “The fact is, I’m not sorry. Our job is to enforce the laws of the country and respond to the worst situations. Our men and women do a very good job in that field every day. We will never stop doing our jobs.”

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced at a news conference Thursday night that a man identified as Oscar Bergal, 28, was shot in the neck after two plainclothes ICE agents approached a car reversing into a parking lot in the Marble Hill neighborhood.
