President Donald Trump has claimed that the two countries have agreed to an “energy ceasefire” as Russia and Ukraine damage their energy infrastructure, but it is unclear whether either side has agreed to a ceasefire.

“Effective immediately, there is an energy ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have agreed. Don’t break it!” Trump said in a social media statement, without providing details about the purported agreement.

The White House referred CNBC to social media posts when asked for more information about the ceasefire.

President Trump’s statement on Truth Social comes amid rising global energy costs during the war between the United States and Iran. An energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia could help ease the oil and gas crunch heading into the winter.

“Ukraine supports the ceasefire and it is important that Russia also supports it,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in a social media post.

“We are waiting for details from the American side,” Zelenskiy said. “For our part, Ukraine will always fully support steps towards de-escalation, protection of life and the necessary decisions to end the war and ensure lasting peace.”

Earlier this week, President Trump slammed Zelenskiy, suggesting he should be fired and blaming high diesel costs that threaten to complicate the Republican Party’s chances ahead of November’s midterm elections. President Trump also said he had signed an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring Russian diesel to the market.

In response, President Zelensky said Ukraine would only stop attacking the refinery if Russia stopped attacking Kiev’s power grid.

A ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine has been consistently difficult since Russia invaded its neighbor in 2022. President Trump has repeatedly sought to end the conflict, but so far has been unsuccessful.

President Zelensky appeared on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday and called on President Trump to “send a signal, not attack Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.”

“If they want an energy ceasefire, we’ll do it. Don’t attack us. Don’t kill our children. We’ll stop attacking your diesel,” he said, according to a transcript of the show.
