At least 30 people are reported to have died after two trains collided in Spain’s Toledo province.

The high-speed train collided just before 9:15 a.m. local time (4:15 a.m. ET) and emergency services were called to the scene. The accident occurred on the Madrid-Seville line, when a stationary vehicle reportedly collided at speeds of more than 100km/h.

Authorities announced that a local sports hall would be opened to assist the victims, and that an advanced medical post would be set up at the accident site to triage the injured, provide medical care and transport those requiring further treatment to hospital. The number of injured is unknown at this time.

Spanish news agency EFE reported on Wednesday that rail infrastructure manager Adif is investigating the events surrounding the accident.

Adif said in a post on X on Wednesday morning that high-speed rail traffic between Madrid and Andalusia had been disrupted.

El Pais newspaper reported that authorities were concerned that the number of confirmed deaths could rise, with officials telling the outlet that the crash could have a worse outcome than a high-speed crash in southern Spain that killed 45 people earlier this year.

“We don’t have the statistics, but it will be a great tragedy,” Spanish Health Minister Monica García told a television news station, according to El Pais news agency.

Authorities do not yet know the exact cause of the crash, but local reports say initial analysis points to human error. Government sources told El Pais that Adif’s operator appears to have made a mistake when the railway signaling system malfunctioned. Although the system is automated, it relies on manual operation in case of signal failure.

Local media said the trains were operated by AVE and Iryo, and at least two vehicles fell into an embankment after the accident. More than 500 passengers were on board the two trains, El Pais said.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in a post on X that he was “shocked” by the accident.

“Emergency services, in coordination with all relevant authorities, are working on the ground to assist those affected and ensure their safety,” he said, according to a translation. “We send our love, solidarity and support to all the victims and their families.”

Mr Sanchez’s political future will be tested in next month’s snap election, which he called in response to growing unrest over Spain’s housing crisis.

Santiago Abascal, leader of the far-right Vox party, which is expected to expand if Spain goes to the polls, on Wednesday blamed Sanchez’s government over the train crash.

“A tragedy has struck again. Once again we are outraged by the neglect, destruction and betrayal suffered by the Spanish people,” he wrote on X.
