The management committee of longtime Wall Street law firm Weill, Gotshal & Manges has recommended that its partners reduce their operations, the firm announced Wednesday.

The recommendation comes after an exodus of partners and talks with Willkie Farr & Gallagher about a possible merger were reported to have concluded several days ago.

Weil, which has about 1,200 lawyers, reportedly had revenues of more than $2 billion across its multinational operations in 2025.

“For more than 90 years, Weil, Gotshal & Manges has had the privilege of advising our clients on their most important issues,” the firm said in a statement to CNBC.

“After careful consideration of strategic alternatives, our management committee has recommended to the partnership that we pursue an orderly winddown,” the company said in a statement. “Partners will vote in the next few days.”

Weil said that during the downsizing process over the coming months, “the company will continue to serve our customers with the dedication and excellence we have known since our founding, and remain committed to supporting our colleagues.”

Over the years, Mr. Weill has been involved in major bankruptcy filings for companies such as Lehman Brothers, General Motors, and Enron.
