The visit marks Trump’s return to campaigning after taking a break at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida on Saturday.

US President Donald Trump plans to hold rallies in Iowa and Kansas, two Republican-leaning states he previously won, in a bid to maintain Republican control of the Senate.

His first stop was Sunday afternoon in Dubuque, Iowa, where Republicans are fighting to hold on to a key Senate seat and the state’s governorship. Trump won Iowa by double digits in 2024.

The 2nd Congressional District, which includes Dubuque, is also becoming more competitive as Republicans work to protect their fragile majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. The battle continues between Gen Z Republican candidate Joe Mitchell and Democrat Lindsey James.

On Sunday, Trump is also scheduled to visit Salina, Kansas, where the last Democratic senator was elected in 1932, but now faces an unexpectedly close race between incumbent Republican Roger Marshall and Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton, a prominent pastor.

The trip marks Trump’s return to the campaign trail after a break at Florida’s Mar-a-Lago club on Saturday. He spent several weeks campaigning in several U.S. states.

Republicans abruptly canceled trips to Iowa and Kansas late Thursday, only to reschedule them. A source close to the Trump administration told Al Jazeera on Friday that the president would personally head the previously canceled rally.

“The rally is starting again!” the official said. “No one works harder, fights harder, or loves the American people more than President Donald J. Trump!”

Opinion polls show Democrats are tied or ahead of Republicans in many state races, and Trump’s approval rating among rural Americans fell to an all-time low of 45% in October, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The campaign has largely focused on states that Trump has traditionally controlled, as voters, including former supporters, question the economic impact of his decisions to impose tariffs and start a war with Iran.

All 35 Senate seats and 435 House seats will be on the ballot Tuesday. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate and a narrow margin in the House. A loss in either chamber would allow Democrats to block Mr. Trump’s policies during the final two years of his term and launch an investigation into an administration that has largely been subservient to the Republican majority.

More than 52 million Americans have already voted in person or by mail, according to the University of Florida Elections Research Institute, a record since the midterm elections and more than the nearly 46 million who voted by Election Day in 2022.
