Elon Musk curbs Grok Bot restrictions due to ‘unsustainably high’ costs

Over Halloween weekend, some Grok Bot users noticed something particularly creepy. Even though I hadn’t used SpaceX’s agent AI all night, I had unexpectedly reached my weekly usage limit. Some users reported that X usage jumped from as low as 50% to 100%.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed in a post on X on Sunday that this was not a glitch.

“Grok Bot’s cost of service was unsustainably high compared to its revenue,” he wrote in response to a user question. Although he doesn’t address the issue on his main feed, he continues to brag about how Grok Bot can help him buy gifts for his family.

Grok Bot is being positioned as a success story for newly public SpaceX, which said in a filing last month that AI now accounts for 52% of company revenue. The renamed “Superintelligence” division actually made $431 million in profits, which is unusual in the AI industry. The company’s profits would have been higher had it not been for the $1.2 billion one-time charge associated with the Cursor acquisition. Musk recently called Grok Bot “the fastest growing product I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Musk has not yet disclosed how subscribers’ usage limits will be affected going forward.
