Democrats are eyeing a historic victory in the U.S. Congress that could change the trajectory of the country.

Voting has begun in parts of the United States for Tuesday’s pivotal midterm elections, with all 435 House seats and 35 of the 100 Senate seats up for grabs.

Voting times are determined and set by each state. Initial voting has begun in Vermont, New Jersey, Virginia, Connecticut and Kentucky, with other states expected to begin Election Day voting soon.

More than 57 million Americans have already voted early, with the highest numbers cast in some of this year’s biggest political battleground states: Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas.

Voters in 36 states will also choose governors.

Republicans currently hold a majority (53 seats) in the 100-member Senate. There are 47 seats held by Democrats and independents who hold caucuses. Republicans also hold a slim majority in the House of Representatives with just four seats.

Democrats campaigned on promises to address the country’s cost of living crisis and end President Trump’s war with Iran.

They are eyeing historic victories in both chambers of Congress that could ultimately change the trajectory of the final two years of the U.S. president’s term.

But Republicans are hoping to defy political gravity.

Despite President Trump’s approval ratings near all-time lows and historic precedent for the party of a sitting U.S. president suffering significant midterm defeats, conservative and right-wing candidates are banking on their most loyal voters and distrust of progressive politics to turn the tide toward an expected Democratic surge.

Tuesday’s midterm election also comes after Haley Stevens, who lost the Michigan Democratic Senate primary in August after endorsing Republican Mike Rogers over fellow party candidate Abdul El-Sayed on Sunday.
