US President Donald Trump said he had reached an agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Washington would no longer provide funds to Israel after the end of this year.
“In terms of payments to Israel, Bibi Netanyahu and I made an agreement to give Israel $4 billion a year, and we made an agreement a few months ago to stop,” President Trump told Fox News’ Fox & Friends after midterm election voting began.
“We have already agreed not to make any payments to Israel until the end of this year. We will now support Israel if they need it.”
It was not immediately clear what form of aid President Trump was discussing. The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to Al Jazeera’s request for comment.
Asked why the U.S. was suspending aid, Trump said: “Because they don’t need it. If they needed it, I would say, ‘Keep going.'”

Military aid to Israel and U.S. political campaign contributions to candidates from Israeli supporters have been a flashpoint for both Democrats and Republicans this year.
The harsh public criticism of Israel by U.S. political leaders in recent years marks a dramatic shift from decades of strong bipartisan support.
In July, the U.S. House of Representatives rejected an amendment to cut aid to Israel, despite support from nearly half of Democrats, reflecting a growing rift between American progressives and Israel over the genocidal war in Gaza.
The House voted 314-104 to reject the bill, which was proposed as an amendment to the State Department spending bill by Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, an outspoken critic of U.S. policy in the Middle East.
“It’s amazing how many hearts and minds can change when the Republican Party is on the brink of annihilation in the midterm elections,” another Trump opponent, former Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, wrote in X.
“Just because Mr. Trump received permission from Prime Minister Netanyahu to cut annual aid to Israel does not change the outcome of today’s election.”
