OpenAI President Greg Brockman says it could be ready for an IPO in 2027

OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman said the company is poised for an IPO in 2027, noting that enterprise revenues are increasing. Speaking at the Wall Street Journal’s technology conference on Wednesday, the executive emphasized how the company is positioning itself in the enterprise market, which rival Anthropic has already successfully penetrated.

“I think so. Yes,” Brockman said in response to an interviewer’s question about preparing for an IPO next year.

“We’ve been very clear this year that we want to go public when we think the time is right, and we feel very good about the business. We feel like we’ve made tremendous progress this year, and honestly, I’ve never been more confident in what we’re doing,” Brockman said.

He detailed how OpenAI’s trajectory as a company has changed through 2026, noting that the first and second quarters were “pretty challenging.” He also acknowledged that OpenAI is “not even in the conversation” when it comes to agent coding, an area where Anthropic’s Claude Code is gaining market share.

“We had the codex, but no one was talking about it,” Brockman continued, “and I think we just put our heads down and ran with it.”

By the third quarter, activity was picking up, with OpenAI’s annual revenue increasing 70% quarter over quarter. Brockman attributes this to a doubling of business on the enterprise side. He explained that this growth was not just a result of the quarter itself, but the culmination of the investments the company had made up to that point.

Currently, the majority of OpenAI’s revenue comes from its enterprise business, which previously only accounted for about 30% of total revenue.

“And it’s not consumer (revenues have shrunk)…it’s growing, but it’s the enterprise sector that’s really taking off,” he said, pointing to a recent partnership with JPMorgan Chase as an example of the type of customers it’s now winning business from.

Brockman also spoke more broadly about the lessons OpenAI has learned from selling into the enterprise market. He said he has come to understand that the company’s job is to help companies identify the most important milestones they can achieve with their AI technology, building trust with customers and proving they are a reliable long-term partner.

“A year ago, we weren’t even in the enterprise game. We were really being seen as a consumer company, and a lot of the companies we started talking to were saying, ‘Is OpenAI really working on the enterprise?'” Brockman said. “But today is completely different.”
