Anthropic announced Thursday that Claude will be getting a new tool called “Personal Finance” designed to help users keep track of their money. It allows users to connect their bank and credit card accounts through Plaid and ask Claude questions about their financial situation. Anthropic said access is read-only and Personal Finance cannot move, manage, or invest users’ funds.
By allowing Claude to connect directly to bank and credit card accounts, Anthropic is positioning the chatbot as a financial partner that helps people understand their spending and make sense of their money, rather than just offering general advice.
With this launch, Claude aims to catch up with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. ChatGPT introduced a similar personal finance tool in May, allowing users to connect to their financial accounts and ask questions about everything from spending patterns to long-term financial plans.
“Claude gives you answers in everyday language, from balances to transactions, and even explains terms that are new to you,” Antropic wrote in a blog post. “Like all Claudes, Personal Finance has no ads, no sponsored recommendations, and doesn’t offer its own credit cards, loans or savings accounts, so your money questions can be answered right away.”

For example, at the end of the month a user can ask Claude, “Where did my money go this month?” The chatbot then totals up your spending across connected accounts and breaks it down into categories like rent, utilities, food and shopping, and more. Users can choose to dig deeper with follow-up questions such as “Are you having more than usual?” or “Is there anything else missing?”
Anthropic says the tool goes beyond a basic spending overview and can analyze transactions between connected accounts to flag potential problems like duplicate charges, unexpected fees, or steadily increasing bills. Users can also ask broader questions about their finances, such as whether they spend more than they earn. The tool explains financial concepts such as APR (Annual Percentage Rate) while also providing a calculation that shows how much interest a user has paid over the past year.
Of course, some people may not feel comfortable connecting their financial accounts to an AI chatbot. Claude’s access is limited to each connected bank’s name, account name and type, last four digits of the account number, balance, credit limit and up to two years of transaction history, Antropic said.
The company also notes that when users chat with Claude in the Personal Finance hub, those conversations are not used to train the model.
Personal Finance begins rolling out beta version this week for users on Pro, Max, and Ultra plans in the US
The release of this new tool comes as Anthropic expands Claude into new areas. For example, Anthropic launched Claude for Legal and Claude for Financial Services earlier this year.
