Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer’s condition is stable and he is recovering well from a spleen injury, Twenty20 captain Suryakumar Yadav said.

Iyer suffered a splenic laceration after falling awkwardly while taking a catch during India’s win over Australia in the third One-Day International (ODI) on Saturday.

The 30-year-old man was hospitalized, and Indian media reported his condition was life-threatening.

“We have spoken to him,” Suryakumar told reporters on Tuesday ahead of the five-match Twenty20 series between India and Australia, which begins in Canberra on Wednesday.

“When I came to know about his injury, I called him. Later, I realized that Shreyas did not have his mobile phone and called physiotherapist Kamlesh Jain. He said that his condition is stable.”

“He’s doing well (right now). I’ve been in contact with him for two days and he’s been responding. If he’s able to respond by phone, that means he’s in stable condition.”

How did Iyer sustain such unusual injuries?

The 30-year-old sustained an impact injury to his lower left rib cage when he dismissed Alex Carey with a sensational backpedaling catch at a crucial moment in the third ODI of the series, which India won by nine wickets.

Iyer, who is also vice-captain of the ODI team, was forced off the field after the injury and did not return for the rest of Australia’s innings.

“He has been taken to hospital for further tests,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement.

“Scans revealed a laceration to his spleen. He is receiving treatment, is medically stable and is recovering well.”

He remained hospitalized in Sydney and the BCCI medical team closely monitored him in consultation with experts from Australia and India.

It’s unclear when Iyer will be able to return to action.

Despite winning on Saturday, India lost the first two matches in Perth and Adelaide, dropping the series 1-2.

India’s next one-day tour is the home series against South Africa starting November 30.

Iyer scored 2,917 runs from 73 ODIs at an average of 47.81.

The five-match T20 series between the two cricketing powerhouses begins on Wednesday, but Iyer will not be a part of the squad.
