At least four people have been killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon, the Lebanese Ministry of Health said. The attack added further pressure to a nearly year-long truce with Hezbollah.

Three people were also wounded in an Israeli attack in the town of Kfarshir in the Nabatiyeh region, the Lebanese Ministry of Health said in a statement on Saturday.

The state-run Lebanese News Agency reported that around 2:15 pm (16:15 pm Japan time), a car was targeted in an attack using a “guided missile.”

The attack came a day after Lebanese President Joseph Aoun accused Israel of escalating attacks in response to his offer to negotiate a more permanent halt to cross-border attacks.

The conflict began in 2023 when Hezbollah launched attacks against Israel in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip following the Hamas-led October 7 attack on southern Israel. After more than a year of fighting, both sides agreed to a ceasefire in November 2024.

Despite the armistice agreement, Israel has stationed troops in five areas in southern Lebanon and continues to carry out near-daily air attacks, repeatedly violating the armistice agreement. Although Israel claims it is targeting Hezbollah, civilians, first responders and journalists have also been killed.

According to the United Nations, Israeli forces have killed at least 111 civilians in Lebanon since the ceasefire took effect.

Aoun, who called for negotiations with Israel in mid-October after US President Donald Trump brokered a ceasefire, said his proposed negotiations were aimed at “ending the Israeli occupation.”

Israel, on the other hand, claimed that the Lebanese government had failed to rein in and disarm Hezbollah and was not defending its side of the ceasefire.

The armed groups have rejected pressure to disarm.

In another sign of rising tensions, President Aoun earlier this week directed the Lebanese army to counter a new Israeli invasion of the south.

The order came hours after Israeli soldiers entered the border town of Blida.

According to the National News Agency (NNA), they stormed the city hall and killed Ibrahim Salameh, a city employee who was sleeping there.

The Israeli military said the operation was aimed at destroying Hezbollah’s infrastructure and that its soldiers opened fire in response to an “imminent threat.”

They provided no further details or evidence behind the killing.
